We were delighted to welcome back former student and Head Boy, James Walsh, as we celebrated his incredible achievement of receiving an offer to study Engineering at Cambridge University!
For James and his family, this achievement is truly special. As the first in his immediate family to attend university, securing a place at one of the world’s top institutions is a moment of huge pride. His parents are overjoyed, and his younger brother Matthew, who now follows in his footsteps at TRS, couldn’t be prouder.
James hadn’t initially considered Cambridge, but upon starting at Oldham Sixth Form College, he was notified that he was among the top-performing students, achieving an average grade of 7+ in his GCSEs. This recognition led to his inclusion in the OSFC Varsity Programme, which was when Cambridge first came onto his radar. He credits the dedication and hard work he put in during Years 10 and 11 as the foundation for his success.
Beyond the classroom at TRS, James fully immersed himself in clubs, extra tuition sessions, and cadets, seizing every opportunity to expand his learning.
When he moved on to Oldham Sixth Form College, his dedication only grew. He took on a 14-hour weekly study schedule through Oxbridge programmes, balancing this alongside his 4 A Levels.
His drive was further recognised when he was awarded the prestigious title of OxNet Scholar, a programme run by the University of Oxford, which selects just 22 students nationwide.
Speaking with James and his mum, Alison, their excitement and pride was undeniable. His journey to Cambridge wasn’t easy, but his determination and effort have paved the way for his future endeavours.
During his visit to TRS, teachers and staff were delighted to catch up with him, which was a reminder of how much he was respected and admired during his time at school.
Now, as he prepares for this next chapter, James is excited about the collaborative learning environment at Cambridge, the stimulating discussions with peers and professors, and the chance to explore subjects he’s passionate about.
James’s journey is an inspiration to all our students, showing that with hard work, ambition, and the right support, incredible opportunities are possible.
Congratulations, James! We are incredibly proud of all you have achieved so far and wish you the very best as you work towards securing your final grades.
