Mathematics is a creative, highly valued and inter-connected discipline. It is essential to everyday life, is necessary for almost all forms of employment and is critical to additional subjects such as science and geography. Our knowledge-rich curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced to allow progression for all students, regardless of their starting point. The accessibility it provides allows a foundation for understanding the world around us, permits opportunities to reason mathematically, and facilitates an appreciation of the intense power of mathematics; ultimately resulting in enjoyment, curiosity and passion for this beautiful subject.

Teaching and Learning
Key Stage 3 – Year 7 - 9
At Key stage 3 we are using the White Rose Scheme of Learning. The scheme of learning covers all the areas outlined in the National Curriculum.
The mastery scheme is based on breaking down the curriculum into manageable steps. Fluency, reasoning and problem solving are embedded through-out the scheme of learning to ensure that all student can progress from their starting point.
The overview of the Ks3 Scheme of learning is shown below
Year 7
Year 8
Year 9
Students have 7 one- hour mathematics lesson over a fortnight.
Key Stage 4 – Years 10 & 11
At Key Stage 4 students start their GCSE course. The scheme of learning followed is White Rose and builds on the KS3 scheme.
The outline of the course is shown below. The scheme covers all areas of the mathematics National Curriculum.
The exam board for Mathematics GCSE is Edexcel. There are two tiers Foundation and Higher.
In Year 11 students complete the second year of their KS4 course and prepare for their GCSE examinations.
Overview of the Qualification
Assessment
At Key Stage 3
- Formative assessments take place every two weeks.
- Summative assessments take place once every half term. There is an end of Year examination in the latter part of the academic year.

- In Year 10 there is an end of year exam in the latter part of the academic year.
- In year 11 there is a Pre-Public Examination in December.
Resources and Rooms
There are 10 rooms for the use exclusively of mathematics learning. Each room is equipped with a SMART board which allows interactive activities for students to engage with. Three of the rooms are computer suites that provide students an opportunity to engage with mathematical software such as Desmos to deepen understanding of concepts.
Students need to be well equipped for mathematics. In addition to stationary, a geometry set and a scientific calculator are essential. These can be purchased from any high street store or from the mathematical faculties.
Key Stage 3 and 4 revision and support materials can be purchased also on Parent Pay and from the Mathematics PPA room.
Home Learning
At Key Stage 3 and 4 students use Sparx Maths home learning platform. This provides personalised home learning and has over 10,000 videos to support students. Home learning takes approximately 1 hour to complete and students must achieve 100%.
In Years 10 and 11 students will also be set GCSE papers.
Extra-Curricular Activities
- Home Learning club at lunchtimes
- G & T club
- Weekly mathematical challenge questions
- Revision after school for Ks4 students
- Visits from University of Manchester Tutors.
