Dear Parents and Carers,
As part of our preparation for next year we will be administering some online tests to all students. These tests are part of the GL Exact testing programme and provide us with information on students’ word recognition, spelling, reading comprehension and dictation (handwriting and typing speeds). We are aware that difficulties in these areas can compromise success in lessons and assessments so we are committing to assessing all students in order to identify anyone with additional needs that may require intervention. If you would like to know more about the tests, please follow this link to their website: Exact – GL Assessment (gl-assessment.co.uk)
These tests do not assess knowledge in the same way as traditional exams. For this reason, there is no pre-learning, revision or knowledge that students need to complete before the assessment – they should just focus on doing their personal best. Please reassure your child that they do not need to worry. This is an important part of our work as a school in making sure we provide the very best education for our students but it is not something they will be judged by. For example, if the test identifies reading comprehension as an area of weakness for a student, we will add them to our ‘Reader-Listener’ intervention programme to support them with useful techniques.
The tests will take place during lesson time in the weeks beginning 17th and 24th June. Students in years 7, 8 & 9 will complete the test in their computing lesson, students in year 10 will complete it in one of their English lessons (see attached table). It is very important that your child attends these lessons and takes the test seriously, failure to do so could delay our interventions in September.
I will work closely with the SEND team to ensure all students who may have barriers to completing these tests are supported appropriately.
If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me via the school office.
Kind regards,
Mrs G Hamilton
