We are thrilled to celebrate Arif Mohid, former Radclyffe School staff member, who recently returned to karate after a 15-year break—and what a comeback it was!
Representing Team GB at the World Martial Arts Championships in Norway, Arif spent three intense days competing against some of the world’s best, bringing home an impressive four medals: three silver and one bronze.
In his own words:
“I’m happy to say I’ve made it back in one piece after competing at the World Martial Arts Championships in Norway.”
Arif had only recently returned to karate for fun, hoping to rekindle a passion he’d left behind. But life had bigger plans.
“As some of you know, I only recently returned to karate after a 15-year break, just wanting to get back into something I used to love. But, as usual, I somehow found myself in one of those ‘unexpected situations’… representing Team GB on the world stage!”
The event proved to be both challenging and painful. Just two days before flying to Oslo, Arif suffered what he believes was a torn back muscle, which is a tough obstacle when competing at the highest level.
“Two days before flying out to Oslo, I picked up what was likely a torn muscle in my back… not ideal when you’re expected to kick, punch, and twist with speed! Even coughing or sitting down was excruciating.”
Despite the setback, Arif refused to let the injury stop him. He worked tirelessly with the team doctor and explored every remedy available to be ready for competition.
“The team doctor told me recovery would take weeks… but after all the hard work, that just wasn’t an option. I’d come too far to back out.”
His perseverance paid off. On Day 1, Arif secured a bronze medal against some of the world’s top athletes. The following day, he faced the reigning world champion from the USA in the final, a formidable opponent with multiple golds already to his name.
“This guy was strong, experienced, and had already won multiple golds, and he currently held the world title. And there was me, returning to martial arts after 15 years… with an injured back!”
Even against such odds, Arif gave it his all, earning respect and admiration along the way.
After three days of fierce competition, Arif walked away with four medals, a few bruises, and a reminder that determination and focus make the impossible possible.
“In the end (after 3 days), I’m proud of what I achieved: 4 medals (3 silver and 1 bronze) for Great Britain, a few bruises, and a reminder that anything is possible if you focus and Aim High!”
Although the injury prevented him from claiming gold, the experience was humbling and rewarding:
“I do feel I could’ve bagged a gold if the injury hadn’t affected my mobility and caused so much pain… but that’s the humbling part of sport. I don’t regret it.”
Arif expressed gratitude to everyone who supported him on this journey: teammates, coaches, his Sensei Irfan Ansari, and especially his family, who witnessed his incredible effort firsthand:
“Big thanks also to my teammates, the entire Team GB squad, our coaches, and especially to my Sensei, Irfan Ansari, for believing in me and pushing me to ‘be in it to win it.’
“And the best bit? My wife and kids were there to see me in action and share the experience…something they’ll never forget.”
Arif’s journey is a testament to resilience, passion, and the power of returning to a sport you love, no matter the challenges. The Radclyffe School is incredibly proud of his achievements and the inspiration he provides to the whole community.
