The Poetry Club have recently produced a moving and thoughtful poem inspired by The Trees by Philip Larkin, a poem that reflects on the passing of time, renewal and the ever-changing nature of life. Inspired by these themes, Year 7 student Mirfa wrote a beautifully crafted poem that quickly became the heart of a wider creative project.
Mirfa’s poem uses the image of a tree to represent the stages of human life, capturing the emotions we experience as we grow and change. Her thoughtful and expressive writing resonated deeply with the rest of the club, who were then inspired to build on her ideas and develop the poem further as a group.
The result is a powerful and moving piece that invites readers to reflect on their own journeys through life. It speaks with real feeling, blending vivid imagery and thoughtful metaphor to express something that feels both deeply personal and universally understood.
To bring the poem to life visually, the students have begun working on a display in the school library. When completed, it will show a tree through the seasons, acting as a visual metaphor for the poem’s themes and adding depth to its emotional message.
A huge well done to Mirfa for her inspiring words, and to the Poetry Club for building something so meaningful together.
In Spring, the tree begins to grow,
A tender shoot from the earth below.
With buds that burst in soft embrace,
A sign of life, a gentle grace. In Summer, it stands tall and proud,
A child of green, its leaves unbowed.
The sun above, the breeze so sweet,
Its branches dance in summer’s heat. But Autumn comes with fading light,
Its strength begins to lose its might.
The leaves turn gold, then fall away,
A sign that time will not delay. In Winter’s chill, the tree goes still,
A silent form upon the hill.
Its life now ends, the branches bare,
A quiet peace within the air.
