Where students encounter barriers to learning, we have a special team in school who are always ready to help.
The Learning Mentors – Miss Cavanagh, Mr Ahmed, Miss Stoloff, Miss Boxall and Mrs Begum – work with students on a one-to one basis. Usually students meet their mentor for one lesson each week. They can help students to address a broad range of issues, including attendance, attainment or behaviour.
The meetings are usually for a limited period, aiming to make a difference quickly. The students are able to catch up on any work missed. Meeting in this way gives students the time and space to work through problems.
Miss Cavanagh said, “We also help to promote student wellbeing, offering extra-curricular clubs before and after school, and a peaceful place to do home learning. They develop strategies with students to deal with the obstacles they might face in their lives.”
The Learning Mentors also work with groups of students. These sessions can help young people address issues like anger management, improve their social skills and resilience.
The work the team does in school aims to ensure that students keep learning, and making progress in all their lessons.
